Prof. Dr. Karl Lang

Karl Lang has worked on antiviral immune responses against arenaviruses for over 16 years. Since 2011 he has been the Chair of Immunology at the Medical Faculty of the University Duisburg-Essen where he focuses on the identification of new mechanisms of local immune activation in context of cancer, infectious diseases and autoimmunity.

Before, he conducted research as principal investigator in the Department of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Infectious Diseases at the Heinrich Heine University in Dusseldorf. After graduating from medical school at the University of Tubingen in 2001, Karl did a postdoc with Nobel Prize Laureate Prof. Dr. Rolf Zinkernagel in Zurich as well as Prof. Dr. Pamela Ohashi and Prof. Dr. Tak Mak in Toronto.

He won the Sofja-Kovalevskaja Award of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation in 2008 and was the youngest full member to be appointed to the North Rhine-Westphalian Academy of Sciences, Humanities and the Arts. Karl has published more than 150 publications.
